A Wider Angle

Just thoughts and responses which I would otherwise forget. Who knows they maybe interesting or even remind us of great ideas we once had...

New school year - new website - big future?

Films for Learning has now been running for two years, students and teachers have had numerous opportunities to develop film making skills and learn about areas of the school curriculum through the opportunities which film enables. We are very grateful to Paul Foster Microsoft's UK Platform Evangelist for his support over the last year. He is working to develop the Films for Learning website from a 'static' viewable only site to a more dynamic interactive experience. Teachers and more importantly students will soon be able to upload their own films to the site, view their own work and feed back on other people’s contributions. All films uploaded will be moderated by teachers before being made available for 'world wide release'! The moderation process will not be necessarily a judge of quality. Films which are not so good can encourage others to do better or allow the film maker to receive valuable peer feedback. The new site will be more than your typical video hosting site for a number of reasons:
  1. The moderation process will ensure that teachers and parents will now that their children/students are safe when using this site.
  2. The content will be searchable by age, key stage, subject/curriculum area and key word.
  3. The content will be produced by the very people who will use it - the content, references, humour etc should be relevant.
  4. The films will be short, concise and free to use.
  5. It will be possible to rate and comment on the films. This will ensure teachers and students have access and be able to sort the best user generated content available.
We will make available resources to help teachers make films with students and support students who wish to make films on their own. Forums will be incorporated into the site enabling discussions, tips and advice to be shared which will contribute to better film making.I hope through this blog to share this experience and some of my thoughts as this new website and exiting opportunity for education develops.
