Microsoft Movie Maker

Microsoft's Movie Maker is a must for anyone starting to make films for learning using a PC. Movie Maker for XP was probably the best version. Movie Maker for Vista had its pitfalls especially in the audio department... volume could only be adjusted downwards! So it was no good if your subject was very quietly spoken.

MS Movie Maker

On the other hand the Vista Version came with excellent DVD Authoring tools - you win some and you loose some!

Windows 7 seems to have solved the volume problem and the DVD authoring is accessed though Movie Maker Live. Both Movie Maker and Movie Maker Live are now free downloads and not included automatically in the operating system.
