    Advice please...

    Hi there

My 17 year old son has just got into animation, and is using Fimo as a modelling clay. Is there anything else you would recommend? And is it advisable to use internal wire, and if so, what would you recommend? And what about tools?

I would like to set him up with decent materials as a Christmas present.

He has the technology bit sorted out.

    Thanks in anticipation

    Jane

    Hi Jane

Fimo is a bit unforgiving for stop-motion animation.

I would reccomend using traditional plasticine for the main animations though he could for instance model eyeballs using Fimo... Fimo tends to go hard and is great for little accessories that don't require movement. Wire frames (or armatures) are good and can be made of single core copper 'earth' wire available from most DIY or trade electrical counters. Make sure the type you get is fairly pliable and not too stiff.

Glad to hear he has the technical sorted out... Over the Christmas period we will be launching a new version of the website which will provide facilities to upload as well as help and community support for things like animation projects. The site has the backing of Microsoft and will be moderated and advert free.

Perhaps you could encourage your son to upload his projects in the new year and we can give him some feedback.

    Kind Regards

     An additional tip...

If you do make 'eyeballs' using fimo, it is quite handy to make them and before they dry hard insert the sharp end of a needle or pin into the pupil of the eye. This sounds gruesome but it enables you to easily adjust the position of the eye in the plasticine 'socket' to give nice effects like rolling of the eyes or looking from side to side.

if it's going to be a fairly long animation, i'd recommend making stuff like jumpers from fimo clay...i've found that with moving characters sometimes i've put fingers through people...not fabulous, really. ( :

but plasticine is definitly the best material you'll get for claymation.

By 'Jumpers' I assume you mean sweaters, wooly pullovers or clothing in general...

Just for the record if you want a description of Clay Animation or Claymation then you can find a very good description on Wikipedia.
