Hi all,

I think that the best video editing software is the ilife video editing software (imovie) as it is free with the mac and offers a whole lot more professions transitions and effects that WMM 2 but what i would like to know though is what other software can i use to convert my movie into different formats to distribute to other people over the internet (as well as the FFL website) or is there and option built into imovie, obviously it needs to be compatible with my mac (OSX 10.5 Leopard)

Any help would be great,

sorry james, i can't help you with your conversion problem, but i have to disagree!

does it not annoy you that iMovie sends your rushes to the trash after you've used a piece of it in your project?

...or did it just not like me much...?

You can upload to the FFL site in a variety of formats... the Brittle Material film from Cramlington Community High School was Mpeg4/Quicktime. (Peter will correct me if I am wrong!).

We will get information up on the upload area shortly on formats and file sizes etc.

I am not sure about free conversion software... Peter might be able to help....

I'm not sure if there is a option in imovie to help you convert files to different formats. Umm, the way that I found the free conversion software that I use (sorry its for a windows machine) is to just try different ones. Read about them, see if its got all of the things that you want it to have, Download and try.

It is risky doing things this way, because of viruses and whatever else. I can't think of any free conversion software for macs but I will have alook and post back here if I find anything.

Increasingly there is more interchangeability between software packages and with different output formats...

If you are using a Macintosh you can view WMV files by downloading a free browser plugin called FlipForMac from www.flipformac.com. If you want to register and pay a fee then you have the option of saving out as a .wmv file in both iMovie and Final Cut Express/Pro. The unregistered version allows you to save .wmv files that don't exceed 29 seconds...

There are also a number of free conversion utilities for PC but you have to experiment with them... SOme will allow you to convert files but then you may have problems importing into your favourite editing package because they strip out timecodes and such. Experiment... Try... and let us know.

Just came across a free Video Conversion program today and have tried it on some large AVI files I wanted to post here.  I wanted high quality conversion to WMV and this one gives you various alternatives.  It seems to be able to convert quite a lot of file types to quite a lot of file types and is easily mastered.  You don't have a time limit, and you don't have to upgrade to the professional version.  Get it from download.com and read the posted comments...they're useful.
