    Open Source/Freeware

Hi All! This is my first post and I wanted to make it a good one! Well I being a student am on a budget and I can't afford all of this up market software but I want power! So I use freeware and there are some I would like to share with you all as I am well aware that some of us here may be on a budget. So without further a-do I present to you Jorden's Software:

    • Blender 3D: Blender is an open source 3D Modelling Program which lets you create animation you can also edit videoand add 3D effects!
    • NVU: NVU is a alternative to Dreamweaver but it doesn't have as many features but it is still very Powerful!
    • Audacity: Is a sound editor that lets you edit and create music files
    • Jodix Free iPod Video Converter: This is a really useful tool for me when I wish to show friends some amature film maker footage as it keeps the quality but compresses really well.
    • GIMP: GIMP is a image manipulator and is a Photoshop alternative. It has most of the features of Photoshop but different names and layout.
    • Dev-Pascal: For all of you ambishous people out there this is a Pascal Compiler it is really good as it has lots of useful features.
    • OpenOffice.org: Is a office package which has lots of tools to allow you to do the basic tasks desired.

Thank You all for taking interest in my post I hope you all try some software and post some replys saying what you think about each one you try. Please feel free to add to the list and let me know what software you use and we'll try and generate a massive list of usefulness!

    Thank You,

    Jorden

As Jorden said, Open source and free software can often be just as good as the commercial software that has the same purpose.

Open software comes in many forms for many different operating systems and even come in the form of many different operating systems, some examples are FreeBSD and Fedora, both are free operating systems. You also have general use software like Synfig which is a 3d and 2d animation program and Scribus (similar to PageMaker, publishing software)

But there is also free software that allow web servers to be run, some examples are the Apache software foundation and Xerver free web server. You can even add PHP and CGI to your server for free by downloading the PHP software from php.net!

Aside from this there is also web based php-installed software that usually require PHP and MySQL databases, some examples are content management systems such as Drupal and Joomla which come in very handy for business interior communication, there is also phpBB which is a free forum software, there is also helpdesk softwarem. Many free web hosts have these ready to install with one click now (usually powered by Layered Panel) an example is freehostingnow and freeweb7.

Open Source software is certainly the way forward and you can get involved in developing it!

A large list of open source software can be found here:

    Re: Open Source/Freeware... remember KIS?

Great debate and each to their own...!

My contribution to this debate is for anyone getting started is to stick to basics.  I recommmend teachers and students to stick with the 'free' software which comes with most operating systems when starting out to make films for learning. As a teacher I have found that students can save their work conveniently on a memory stick (in MS moviemaker project file, source file and any copyright free music(?!) and work between school and home. Of course you have to have chosen your intended audience and medium at the point of capture or importing to project so your file sizes are not too big... remember if you are going to showcase your work on the web (FFL website of course!) you don't want your file sizes too big anyway...

I am afraid I still tend to stick to basics for (what I think are) the best results, but do't let me stifle the debate...

    Oh yes KIS...

    KEEP IT SIMPLE!
