    Background Information

     SWGfL Animation Competition

     Film Animation Competitions

SWGfL* is organising a regional Film Animation Competition across the south west at the end of 2008/9. There will be three categories: KS1, KS2 and Special. Entries from schools will first go forward to your local authority event, and then on to regional finals.

We have funded a full day animation workshop for teaching staff in your local authority with Oscar Stringer, nationally renowned educator in film and animation techniques. For information on how to book a place on the training go to our Animation Workshops page. We can answer questions you may have with our FAQs.

We are working in partnership with Kudlian and other educational suppliers on this competition. They will be making discounted offers and offering prizes for the LA animation competitions. Go to the Animation Resources page for more information.

For further information about using animation with your class: easy techniques; useful websites; curriculum planning; go to the Teaching Animation page. Also download Oscar's Animation for Education support pack (purchased for you).

To find out about and find out about the competition timeline and a blueprint for creating your own LA Animation Competition Event see below:

    The Competition

The proposed timeline is as follows:

    Autumn 2008

For consultation and publicity in the region. This minisite with information and guidance will be set up and publicity posters delivered to schools at the end of the year. These posters will be mainly advertising Oscar's fifteen animation workshops across the south west. There will be a link to this minisite. Venues for these events need to be confirmed before the end of the year.

    Spring 2009

Is for practical support with 15 animation workshops run by Oscar Stringer and his team. For more about the workshops go to the Animation Workshops page. Local authorities will decide the title for their local authority competition. It may have an historical theme or a Literacy focus, giving the opportunity to work across the authority with other curriculum consultants and target the competition to support a specific area of teaching and learning. Lots of support with resources, planning and techniques will be made available through this site.

    Summer 2009

Is for teachers to work with their classes using film animation techniques in any curriculum area or subject. Schools should now be aware of local authority events and the title of their competition. Another SWGfL leaflet can go out at this stage promoting the local competition. Some authorities already have this publicity set up but SWGfL can support with publicity posters. We hope to also have local information and links on this minisite.

    1. The Noscars is the North Somerset event,
    2. Young Motion Plymouth is the film makers competition in Plymouth
    3. Wiltshire's creativity awards are the WiSCAs.
Others will be added as confirmed.

    End of 2009

We hope to have received entries for a regional competition, categories: KS1, KS2 and Special. A page showcasing these three winners from each LA will be linked from this site. A special panel of judges will decide the best KS1, KS2 and Special film animation created by children in the south-west in 2009. These winners will be notified in the new year January 2010, and their prizes sent to the three winning schools.

*SWGfL are the promoters of this competition. Films for Learning are providing the platform for hosting the films and discussions for Teachers and Students. Any correspondence regarding the competition should be directed to the South West Grid for Learning.

    Eligibility

All children in schools in the SWGfL will be eligible to enter for this competition.

    Judging

Local authority events and the SWGfL final competition will be judged by a panel of experts. We suggest peer assessment is used by the schools to decide which is the best animated film from the school.
