Always carry a Microphone when filming

It may be pretty obvious to some people but to others it's not. I don't normally carry a microphone with me but recently I have. So, my advice to you all is to always carry a microphone (even if you don't want any sound recorded) because films are always in a state of dvelopment and you never know what new ideas you're going to come up with.

Thanks again and have a pleasant day.

Good tip! I suggest you listen to it. I've noticed that cameras have the tendency to break just the microphone or the wind to ruin the audio, Microphones usually come with wind shields which means that you can record a much clearer sound. It also saves time having to dub over things which can be a very tedious process.

definetly carry mics, but if you do, bring headphones as well, even if they are just from your iPod, to monitor the audio input. i've edited a multi-angle film before now where a LOT of the audio was missing due to faulty microphone sockets. not great. so always check!!

it's important for the camera operator to communicate with the sound technician whilst filming as well - worthwhile if you don't want a furry grey thing in your shot.

Absolutely... If you are 'sound' or 'boom' operator you cannot afford to be a wilting violet... Shots can be ruined if the sound operator isn't prepared to call 'cut'.

I know this personally as when I was helping on a film (see three brownies) If it hadn't been for the communication between us shots would have had a shadow of the boom and I as it happened we didn't need the audio but there was always the possibility.

Very true peter, in the past microphones have been disfunctional and for one reason or another though the sound technician was aware of this, he did not want to distrub the film...

Confusing really, seeing as how his disturbing would have been heard on the film because the mic was broke :P

CHECK YOUR MIC BEFORE YOU GO!
